Gamble Staempfli was born 1973 in New York City.  Today he lives with his wife Cary in Highland Mills NY, they share an art studio in Beacon NY.  In 1996 Gamble earned a B.F.A. in painting from Bard College, which also awarded him the Jane Yacenda Fromm Scholarship, given to “those who combine technical innovation with love of craft”.  Before moving upstate, Gamble lived for 12 years in Williamsburg Brooklyn.   He worked as a commercial sculptor For Howard Kalish Studios and as an artists assistant to artists such as Roxy Paine, Judy Fox, and Robert Lazzarini.  In 2001 Gamble was the lead sculptor for Matthew Barney on the set of Cremaster 3.  In that same year he graduated cum laude from the New York Academy of Art with an MFA in Painting.


As an undergraduate Gamble worked as an assistant teacher.  Since earning his MFA, Gamble has taught life drawing, sculpture and painting both privately and at the 92 St.Y, among several other NYC cultural institutions.  He co-authored/illustrated the “Go Figure” Curriculum in 2000, a course of figurative arts training designed to meet the needs of  under-served NYC public high school students. 

Gamble's work has been shown in a variety of  exhibitions in and around the New York area, and is represented in numerous national and international collections.  In May of 2000, his first solo show, entitled “On Dogs” opened at F/P fine arts in Williamsburg Brooklyn.  In 2004 he was interviewed by Sarah Lilley for NPR's Studio 360 about his studio practice.  Much of the discussed work is included in Gamble's 2006 series of drawings, paintings and sculpture, collectively titled “The Running D.O.G.”.  In 2007, Gamble was a resident at The Center for Art and Nature in Ferarra, Spain.  Most recentlly he has focused on drawings of animals and is currently developing a series of conceptually driven work on that subject.   Gamble's "Heaven of Dogs" was exhibited at the Grand Rapids Art Museum in Sept-Oct 2010 during "ArtPrize"
In Sept 2010, Gamble participated in the Beacon Open Studios Event, and his drawing "Listen and Repeat"  was exhibited at the Kickoff Party at Hudson Beach Glass Gallery in Beacon.  New for 2011: With support from Molly Merson of Vagabond Gallery, new work was recently exhibited in Milan, Italy during the AAF.  Beginning March 12, recent sculpture can be seen at Ann Street Gallery with the opening of "In Rare Form", a group show of contemporary sculpture curated by Virginia Walsh.  I hope you can make it!
